Seminar

Viewpoint is one of the basic concepts of cognitive linguistics research which indicates the perspective from which the speaker views the situation. In cognitive linguistics, expression of viewpoint represents how the speaker understands the situation. Even in the same situation, the viewpoints may be expressed differently if the construal of the speaker varies.  Maintaining a consistent viewpoint is one of the important elements in Japanese texts. However, this consistency is not always maintained in Japanese writings produced by non-native learners. In this presentation, I want to discuss the non-native expressions that arises from the learners’ lack of awareness of the consistent viewpoint in Japanese. This presentation discusses (1) the characteristics of viewpoint expression in Japanese writings and speeches produced by Vietnamese learners and (2) effective teaching methods that help students who are having difficulties with regard to viewpoint expression in Japanese.
