Japan is among the countries who attract the most substantial research interests in the world for economic history, with miraculous growth in three stages: The first stage was in the Edo period (1603), the second stage from the Meiji Restoration (1868) and the third stage from after the Second World War (1945) with a focus on developing cutting-edge industries and where Japan emerged as the world's second-largest economic powerhouse. This strong transformation can be attributed to many reasons, especially the way Japan actively studied and applied Western technological advances to industrial development.

In the course of learning, applying and converging modern science and technology to its industrial development, the Japanese government has translated scientific and technical terms from Western languages into Japanese and popularized them through education and training. It is thanks to the translation of these terms and materials that the Japanese have learned and absorbed the advanced scientific and technical knowledge regardless of whether they are proficient in foreign languages or not.

In this special lecture, Prof. Kozō Ishizaki will talk about industrial development in Japan in the last two centuries from educational and linguistic perspectives. In his lecture, Prof. Ishizaki will also spend time to discuss and answer questions from the participants.

The lecture will provide opportunities for VJU students, researchers and interested persons to learn more about Japanese industrial breakthroughs and the contributions of linguistics and education to this cause.
